IT Security Practitioner
Overview:
A 4-week course in which students will learn and understand the best practices and standards required to work as an Information Security Practitioner.

Delegates will have the opportunity to acquire external certifications from Microsoft, Check Point, Security+ and the Institute of Security and Open Methodologies, ISECOM.

Length: 4 weeks
Who should take this class?
This course is aimed at individuals who want to move into the Information,Internet or Network Security arena. They would already be IT literate.

Module 1. Security Fundamentals:
Covers the fundamental issues of Information security. Using many practical labs, this module covers such topics as using TCP/IP for computer communications, types of attack, applied cryptography, firewalls and intrusion detection systems, World Wide Web and operating system security.

Module 2. Designing Security for Microsoft Networks:
This module provides you with the knowledge and skills to design a secure network infrastructure. Topics include assembling the design team, modelling threats, and analysing security risks in order to meet business requirements for securing computers in a networked environment.

Module 3. VPNs Installation and Configuration:
This module covers the VPN technologies in use today and all aspects of the design and deployment of such a system. By following many hands-on labs those attending will gain a lot of practical experience which will allow them to play a pivotal role in choosing and implementing the most appropriate VPN system for their own environment.

Module 4. CompTIA Security+:
This module covers the entire syllabus required to pass the Security+ certification exam. It will be of particular interest to you if you plan to have job responsibilities that include securing network services, network devices and network traffic.

Module 5. Multi-Firewall Training:
This module focuses on the theory and best practices of protecting the network perimeter. Delegates will put their newly acquired knowledge into practice with a variety of products such as Zone Alarm, Smoothwall, Cisco PIX, Check Point's Firewall-1 on Nokia Security Platform, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server.

Module 6. Penetration Testing:
This module covers the principles of penetration testing and some of the tools used. Students will learn the differences between a Hacker and a Penetration Tester before going on to study the types of procedures followed by the professional penetration tester. Delegates will be prepared for the Institute of Security and Open Methodology Security Tester examination, OPST.

Module 7. Cryptography:
This module looks at how cryptography is used to protect transmitted information. The public key infrastructure practical is based on Verisign’s PKI.

Module 8. Application and Systems Security:
This module looks at security issues from the viewpoint of the Developer, Information Security Practitioner and the users.


Module 9. Business Continuity and Disaster Planning:
This module is about making plans and creating a framework to ensure minimal disruption to a business.

Module 10. Physical Security:
This module focuses on the physical environment and supporting infrastructure.


Module 11 Law and Ethics:
Covers what laws apply to computer crime and theethical responsibilities a Security Practitioner has to the profession as a whole.

Module 12. Job Preparation:
Module prepares participants in gaining effective job seeking skills including: CV preparation, Preparing job application forms and letters, Job seeking through recruitment agencies, local press and the Internet, Interview skills.
